A taste of the North

"He who cooks today isn't hungry, he has a taste for food." This is how a leading food trend researcher described the current shift in our food culture. Arndt Brockmann has taste. And not only in culinary matters. As someone who has held leading positions in the international fashion world for many years, he is well acquainted with all the facets of good taste. Good taste and good quality shape his entire life. This can be seen not only in the creative and stylish design of the house which Brockmann recently moved into with his spouse, but also in his choice of an aesthetically and functionally perfect kitchen, providing a calm and relaxing counterpoint to his busy professional life and the perfect milieu for a savvy amateur chef.

A kitchen as an oasis.

It was love at first sight when Arndt Brockmann and his wife set eyes on the classic red Hamburg brick domicile so full of character and with an extensive garden forming what looked like a green island at the confluence of two idyllic canals. During that first visit, he already began to develop specific ideas about fitting his ideal kitchen into the limited space available.

Following an intensive phase of planning and renovation work, a high-quality, timeless and elegant SieMatic kitchen is now seamlessly integrated in the dining area, forming the vibrant centerpiece of the house. A spacious workspace combined with professional functionality allows for ambitious cooking, individually or – particularly importantly to Arndt Brockmann – with good friends.

At the heart of the open kitchen is an elegant kitchen island, a handleless SieMatic SLX with a ceramic countertop and side panels in expressive dark SieMatic StoneDesign. An unusual feature is the small herb garden that lightens the sculptural weight of the island and ensures a constant supply of fresh herbs within reach. To provide friends with ample space to help during the food preparation, the versatile island serves as a two-sided work surface with additional storage, as well as a lively meeting point with available bar seating.

With their clean lines, the tall, agate-grey cabinets at the rear of the kitchen are elegantly discreet. They conceal custom-made refrigerators and freezers storing the numerous ingredients from which Arndt Brockmann regularly creates his extraordinary culinary delights. And because a good meal requires good wine, the certified wine connoisseur also had a professional wine cooler installed.

The kitchen countertop, which has a seamlessly integrated sink, is made of durable ceramic. Its dark marble texture provides a beautiful contrast to selected details, such as the gold bronze handles of the drawers and pull-outs. The integration of a large mirror behind the sink area visually extends the kitchen into the dining area, which ends in a semicircle along the outer wall. This, together with the tall windows offering an unobstructed view into the expansive garden, creates a vibrant sense of space.

"Cooking is an act of love. You feed people with emotion."

Arndt Brockmann's kitchen centres around a striking, generous island with all the functionality of a workbench. With its easy-to-reach storage spaces, drawers and pullouts, it provides convenient access to all the utensils required. Making cooking a pleasure for any number of people.

Any good party starts and ends in the kitchen. This is where it truly comes into its own. A place to relax from the daily grind, be creative, take a break or celebrate with family and friends. The kitchen is an invitation to cook and enjoy, connecting heart and mind.
